Tonight - DANZIG in St. Paul, WRETCHED in Minneapolis, WINTERSUN in Eau Claire

A lot of recent travel has prevented me from posting, but tonight is a big night of metal if you're looking to get out. First, barring any last-minute fiascoes like the aborted show at Cabooze in Minneapolis a couple years ago, Danzig performs tonight at Myth in St. Paul with support from Scar The Martyr (featuring Joey Jordison of Slipknot), Huntress, local hardcore band In Defence. This is part of Danzig's 25th Anniversary Tour and will feature a special Misfits set with guitarist Doyle. It's an all ages show that starts at 6:30, and tickets are $25 at the door.

In Minneapolis, tonight you can catch death metal band Wretched with Abiotic, Allegaeon, Rivers Of Nihil, and Solar Slaughter at Studio B in the Skyway Theater. This is an 18+ show with doors early at 5:00 and tickets $10 at the door.

Lastly, if you're in the east metro area or western Wisconsin, it's not far to Eau Claire to see Finland's Wintersun as they embark on their first North American headlining tour at The Oxford Theater. There's strong support from Fleshgod Apocalypse, Arsis, and Starkill, making this well worth the drive. It's an all ages show that starts at 7:00, and tickets are $20 at the door.

This tour announcement slipped my radar (I usually don’t look out for shows in Eau Claire!), so here it is better late than never. Symphonic metal gods Wintersun have lined up a big North American tour in August and September that hits most of the U.S. and Canada, including a rare show in Eau Claire, Wisconsin at The Oxford Theater on Saturday, August 17. Support on the tour comes from Fleshgod Apocalypse, Arsis, and Starkill, so it’s well worth the short drive if you live in the Twin Cities metro. Tickets for the Eau Claire show are on sale now through Brown Paper Tickets.

Tonight - KRISIUN, ARSIS, & STARKILL in St. Paul

Following the unfortunate cancelation of Hypocrisy, Brazil's death squad Krisiun have taken over the headlining slot of the tour that stops in St. Paul at Station 4 tonight with technical death band Arsis and symphonic, technical newcomers Starkill. Opening the show are local bands Derelta, Diabolical Sacrilege, and Daigoro. This should be one heck of show. It all starts at 6:00, and it's a 16+ show.

The new album from Arsis, Unwelcome, was just released last week as was Starkill's debut, Fires Of Life. Check out the lyric video for "Unwelcome" by Arsis, and the video for "New Infernal Rebirth" by Starkill.

It seems forever since Starve For The Devil came out in 2010, and the usual delays and personnel changes have ensued during the intervening time. The timing of this release is a bit odd, only four months or so before the new album, Unwelcome, is released on April 30. Who’s to complain, though, as this EP delivers six songs, only one of which will appear on Unwelcome (“Carve My Cross”). Whereas Starve For The Devil suggested a move towards straight-forward thrash, Lepers Caress signals that Arsis is instead sticking with their trademark, technical thrash-inspired death metal sound. “Haunted, Fragile, and Frozen” is an instrumental that leads off the EP, building up from an acoustic start into a slow, epic riff that blasts into the fast “Six Coffins Wide”. It doesn’t let up from there, with a brutal machine gun snare and wicked double-bass drumming underlying fast, technical guitar riffs and solos. If these are the leftovers from the writing sessions for Unwelcome, then the new album should be a monster. The constant turnover in the band would usually be a cause for concern, but Lepers Caress is a fine reminder that Arsis is still at the top of their game. Concert Announcements - May 3, 2013

As previously reported, Krisiun, Arsis, and Starkill will continue on to play all scheduled dates on which Hypocrisy and Aborted have pulled out. Added to the bill on Tuesday, May 7 at Station 4 in St. Paul are local support band Deretla, Diabolical Sacrilege, and Daigoro.

Locals Thira and Granola Noise Nelmut team up for a free show at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis on Wednesday, May 22. More bands will be announced.

Hard rock band Candlebox returns to the Hi 5 Bar in Burnsville on Saturday, June 15 as part of their 20th Anniversary Tour with support from Echo Effect and Vaudeville.

The just-announced Candlebox show now means that the show from Chicago’s Hessler on Saturday, June 15 at the Hi 5 Bar in Burnsville has been CANCELED. Also scheduled to appear at this show were Electric Eye and Metal Witch.

As announced here on Sunday, Melechesh has lined up a North American tour that brings them to Station 4 in St. Paul on Monday, June 24. Playing with Melechesh will be Vreid, Lightning Swords Of Death, Reign Of Lies, and Pestifere.

Adler, featuring former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler, has canceled their summer tour that includes two area stops: Sunday, June 30 at Buster's in Mankato and Monday, July 1 at Station 4 in St. Paul. The cancelation is due to Steven Adler once again entering rehab.

Legendary punk band Social Distortion plays the outdoor plaza at Cabooze in Minneapolis on Tuesday, July 2 with Cheap Time and Dave Hause. Tickets on on sale today, Friday, May 3 at 12:00 noon at The Joint, Electric Fetus, First Avenue, and etix.

Alice In Chains returns to Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul on Tuesday, July 9 with Chevelle and Monster Truck. Tickets on sale through Ticketmaster, tomorrow, Saturday, May 4 at 10:00 am. As revealed earlier, click here for information on the ticket presale that starts today, Friday, May 3 at 10:00 am.

Big-time 70s guitarist Peter Frampton plays the State Theatre in Minneapolis with support from Kenny Wayne Shepard on Sunday, July 21 as previously reported. Reserved seating tickets go on sale today, Friday May 3 at 11:00 through Ticketmaster.

Southern-styled hard rock band Black Stone Cherry will play the Hi 5 Bar in Burnsville on Sunday, August 4 will support from Echo Effect and Wayward Boyz.

As previously announced, the Summer Slaughter tour lands in St. Paul at Station 4 on Wednesday, August 14. This year’s tour features The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, Rings Of Saturn, Thy Art Is Murder, and Aeon.

The next set audio downloads comes from the mighty Arsis from the Frets of Fury Tour that blazed through Station 4 in St. Paul on October 19. No, mainmain/guitarist/vocalist James Malone did not perform at this show as he had to sit out this tour. If you doubt whether his touring replacements Brandon Ellis (guitar) and Mark Parks (vocals) were up for the job, then you need to check out the videos below before dismissing this. Brandon is simply an amazing, young technical guitarist. Watch him trade some wicked solos with Nick Cordle as the lead-in to "Forced To Rock"!
