Tonight - ANTHRAX, EXODUS, HIGH ON FIRE, MUNICIPAL WASTE, HOLY GRAIL in Minneapolis

Exodus performing January 30, 2010 at The Rock in Maplewood. Click to see more pictures from this show (14).

The only show happening tonight is a big one - the Metal Alliance Tour featuring thrash gods Anthrax and Exodus alongside High On Fire, Municipal Waste, and Holy Grail at First Avenue in Minneapolis. Tickets are still available for $30 at the door, and it's an 18+ show that starts early at 6:30 (according to the First Avenue website). Jon Donais of Shadows Fall is filling in on second guitar for Anthrax following the departure of Rob Caggiano for Volbeat in January.

RELATED CONTENT: I've posted a slew of recent material related to this concert: audio downloads of Anthrax in 1991 on the Clash Of The Titans tourformer Anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz's new band Red Lamb in St. Paul on March 24, 2013, and Exodus (with Paul Baloff) on July 23, 1997, reviews of the new Anthrax, Holy Grail, and Red Lamb album and March 24 concert (with pictures), and, in the From The Vault series, AnthraxS.O.D., and Armored Saint.

EXODUS - July 23, 1997

Thrash pioneers Exodus perform tonight, April 4 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, so to mark the occasion here's the audio recording of the band performing at The Hurricane in Kansas City in 1997 on their initial reunion tour with vocalist Paul Baloff, who passed away in 2002.

I first saw Exodus while promoting the Force Of Habit album in 1993 at the Adler Theater in Davenport, Iowa supporting Black Sabbath's Dehumanizer tour with Skew Siskin. The band's fortunes were in decline at the time and Exodus called it quits soon after.

After reforming with Paul Baloff, Exodus released the live album Another Lesson In Violence in 1997 and this show is from the tour to support it. The band was completely reenergized since I had previously seen them, and the show featured here completely rips with most songs from the debut album Bonded By Blood.

I had originally posted this show about three years ago, but this version has been completed remastered. The audio was taken from the digital transfer of the original VHS-C video tape. This version has a lot of the tape hiss removed, and the overall sound is much improved.

The download link is here. As always, please share, but share the link to this post rather than the direct Mediafire link. Enjoy!

In Concert This Week - March 29, 2013

The crush of concerts continues over the next week, so pick and choose wisely!

Tomorrow, Friday, March 29, industrial/dance band I:Scintilla plays Ground Zero in Minneapolis with Gabriel And The Apocalypse, Go Fight, and Goodnight Criminals.

Saturday, March 30 is a big night starting with As I Lay Dying, The Devil Wears Prada, For Today, and The Chariot at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The same night pop-punk band Sum 41 plays Mill City Nights in Minneapolis with Hollerado. Also on Saturday, Station 4 in St. Paul has local shock masters Impaler with Mordwolf, Mastiff, and Compassion Dies.

Sunday, March 31 may be Easter, but there’s still some great live music to be heard. Rapcore crew (hed)p.e. returns to Station 4 in St. Paul with Nuisance, Strate-Jak-It, and Angry Room. Local industrial metal band Screaming Mechanical Brain plays the What’s Up Lounge in Mankato with Milwaukee’s Candy Machine Guns and Evasive Maneuver. Also on Easter Sunday, you can catch Apocalypse Theatre and their Revolution Circus show at G.B. Leighton’s Pickle Park in Fridley.

Candy Machine Guns stick around the area for another show on Tuesday, April 2 at G.B. Leighton’s Pickle Park in Fridley.

Candy Machine Guns performing March 24, 2013 at Station 4 in St. Paul.

Denmark’s Volbeat return for another sold-out show, this time at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis on Wednesday, April 3 with support from Danko Jones and Spoken. Swedish sleeze rockers Crashdiet play the same night at G.B. Leighton’s Pickle Park in Fridley with Crucified Barbara and Snakeskyn Whiskey. Wednesday is also the start of the weekly, month-long residency for sludge band Witchden at Cause Spirits & Soundbar in Minneapolis with openers Vulgaari and Buzzard.

If that isn’t enough, then Thursday, April 4 has one what should be one of the biggest thrash shows of the year with Anthrax, Exodus, High On Fire, Municipal Waste, and Holy Grail at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

In Concert This Week - October 12, 2012

The (unintended) time away flies quick, and I’ve gradually been bringing the concert calendar (right) fully up to date. After previewing all of the shows coming up this week, I’ll highlight other new concerts in three separate posts for the remainder of October, November, and December and beyond. There’s a ton of great bands coming to the area so brace yourself. As usual, I’ve got a backlog of album reviews, concert reviews, pictures, audio downloads, and fun tales that I’ll get posted as time allows. Your patience and continued support is appreciated!

Built-for-radio hard rock band Three Days Grace plays a sold out show at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis tonight, Friday, October 12.

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 13 thrash gods Exodus play the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis with local support from Impaler, Black Rainbow, and Mördwolf. The bad news is that this is part of the annual Zombie Pub Crawl. Go visit their website for full details, but purchase of a wristband ($23 advance/$40 day of) does not guarantee admission to the venue. This venue is too small for Exodus for this type of event, so if you really must endure an annoying zombie crowd you better get to the Triple Rock early when doors open at 5. You decide whether it’s worth the hassle.

Twin Cities metalcore giants After The Burial bring the heat to Station 4 in St. Paul for an all ages show this Sunday, October 14 with The Contortionist, Reflections, I Am Vengeance, and CounterMeasure.

Hard rock favorites Seether bring along Sick Puppies, Kyng, and Eye Empire for a show on Tuesday, October 16 at Mill City Nights.

Expect the unexpected when Iwrestledabearonce, Oceano, Vanna, Within The Ruins, The Plot In You, Surrounded By Monsters, and The Disaster Radiu invade Station 4 in St. Paul on Wednesday, October 17.

Rap-metal survivors (hed)pe return to town on Thursday, October 18 at Station 4 in St. Paul with Sore and Dopesic for an all ages show.

Across town at The Cabooze in Minneapolis on Thursday, October 18 alternative-punk godfathers Dinosaur Jr. play with support from Shearwater.

Look for a slew of new concert information coming soon in three more posts.

I unearthed another box of rock memorabilia goodies and wanted to start sharing some of it - lots of old flyers, ticket stubs, set lists, guitar picks, etc. I've updated a couple previous posts with some relevant materials. Go check these out!
Exodus concert - I added the flyer for the 1997 Kansas City show bootleg that was posted
Alice In Chains concert review - I added a couple old concert ads from the Dirt tour and a Jerry Cantrell-signed ticket stub from Layne Staley's last performance with Alice In Chains
Cannibal Corpse concert - A ticket stub from The Bleeding tour in Chicago was added. This was the same tour as the 1994 Des Moines show bootleg posted

Rare Exodus Footage With Paul Baloff - July 23, 1997

Since Exodus recently rolled through town with Arch Enemy (see the photos and concert review here), I thought I'd post a special treat. Here is some rare video footage of Exodus with Paul Baloff (RIP) singing in support of their Another Lesson In Violence album. I shot this video on July 23, 1997 at The Hurricane in Kansas City, Missouri. This is the first time I've released this entirely uncirculated concert, so you won't find this anyplace else! I was standing directly in front of guitarist Gary Holt, so at times the audio from his monitor is predominant. Digital transfer was done directly from the VHS-C master tape. Links to download the audio tracks only (mp3@320 kbps, 124.17 MB) and the individual video files (mov, H.264, 640 x 480) are available in the text file link below. The video files are large (239.26–447.99 MB) to preserve the highest possible quality.

If you'd like to share the download link above, please link to this blog post rather than directly linking the download link to the text file. Thanks!

Arch Enemy, Exodus, Arsis Concert Review

Arch Enemy, Exodus, Arsis
Saturday, January 30, 2010
The Rock, Maplewood, MN

The Rock was already packed to near-capacity for this heavy-hitting tour as I squeezed through the line immediately at the start of Arsis’s set. Arsis canceled their tour the last time they were scheduled to play in The Cities, so I excited to hear a preview of their forthcoming album Starve For The Devil. A majority of the 30-minute set seemed to be new material and it definitely sounds like the band is moving into thrash metal territory. The band appeared confident despite their low name recognition amongst the crowd, and their guitarists’ technical abilities really shined. Arsis suitably warmed-up the audience and received a rousing farewell as they left the stage.

Exodus next took the stage, opening with “Bonded By Blood” before delving into “Iconoclasm” from their most recent album The Atrocity Exhibition – Exhibit A. Maybe the younger crowd wasn’t used to an old-style thrash attack, so singer Rob Dukes began berating the audience for the weak pit action. The incitement continued after “A Lesson In Violence”, and the crowd up front finally began to respond. Exodus clearly feeds off the crowd, and the band sounded reinvigorated when the first crowd-surfer landed over the security fence during “Children Of A Worthless God”. By now Exodus sounded fully charged as they ripped through “Piranha” and “Deathamphetamine”. A couple tracks from Tempo Of The Damned followed (“Blacklist” and “War Is My Shepherd”), which then led into the obligatory classic “The Toxic Waltz”. The band again reached back to Bonded By Blood for “Strike Of The Beast” to close the set amidst loud cheers. At 60 minutes, this was a fine Exodus set, but I was left disappointed that nothing from their forthcoming new album wasn’t played. I’ve also never quite understood their heavy reliance on Bonded By Blood on recent tours. Sure, it’s a great album, but there’s so much of the Exodus’s awesome catalog that’s ignored and some songs from Pleasures Of The Flesh and Fabulous Disaster would be welcome.

The crowd was clearly here for Arch Enemy, and a great roar went up as the band arrived with an impressive light show. As with Exodus, it’s been nearly three years since Arch Enemy’s last album, so a comprehensive career-spanning set was offered tonight. Quite shockingly, “The Immortal” from 1999’s Burning Bridges opened the show before more recent and familiar material was presented. “Revolution Begins” and “Ravenous” saw Angela Gossow take command of the stage as all eyes were focused on the deathly growls that emanated from her petite form. Doomsday Machine was next represented by “Taking Back My Soul” and “My Apocalypse”, then stepping back to 2003 for “Silent Wars”. Little time was wasted between songs, so “I Will Live Again” and “Dead Eyes See No Future” were ripped through before another old number, “Bury Me An Angel”. Following “Dead Bury Their Dead”, the set closed with the band’s most well-known song, “We Will Rise”. Primarily older songs were featured in the encore, including “Snow Bound”, “Nemesis”, and “Fields Of Desolation”. Arch Enemy made their way through an impressive number of songs in 60 minutes, and it was nice to hear acknowledgment of the band’s earliest albums before Angela took over as vocalist. The band sounded impressive tonight, and there was something for all fans to enjoy.
