The work week kicks off with two great shows in the area. In Minneapolis, Mill City Nights has a co-headlining show with Sevendust and the reformed Coal Chamber. Supporting the bill is Italy's Lacuna Coil and Candlelight Red. This is an 18+ show that starts at 7:30; tickets are $32 at the door. Check out the recent posts for the review of the latest Sevendust album Black Out The Sun (9/10), audio of Sevendust on July 19, 1997, and From The Vault features of both Sevendust and Coal Chamber with lots of pictures and old concert ads from 1997-2000.

Watch the video for "Decay" from the new Sevendust album Black Out The Sun.

The intensity increases at Station 4 in St. Paul tonight with death metal legends Suffocation performing with support from Exhumed, Jungle Rot, Rings Of Saturn and Adimiron. This is a 16+ show with an early 6:00 start, and it's $25 at the door. Come back later for a From The Vault feature on Exhumed! I haven't had a chance to write a review, but Suffocation has a great new album out on Nuclear Blast, Pinnacle Of Bedlam.

From The Vault - COAL CHAMBER

Following an absence of nearly ten years, Coal Chamber has reformed with new bassist Chela Rhea Harper and is out now on a co-headlining run with long-time tour mates Sevendust that brings them to Minneapolis on Monday, April 8. Vocalist Dez Fafara is now splitting his time with DevilDriver, who are due to release their sixth album later this year. This post features a lot of pictures and promotional materials from Coal Chamber during their original run from 1996–2000 with bassist Rayna Foss during the period of their first two albums, Coal Chamber and Chamber Music.

My first time seeing Coal Chamber was on June 10, 1997 at Riverport Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Missouri (outside St. Louis) when they performed on the second stage on the first Ozzfest tour. After their short, explosive set the band came out to mingle with the crowd at the front of the stage where I got this postcard signed by everyone.

The band did extensively touring in 1997 and 1998 that brought them to Kansas City or Lawrence many times, including this one in Olathe, Kansas on February 12, 1998. I remember them playing Liberty Hall and the Granada Theater in Lawrence, Kansas, one of them I believe was with Machine Head, but I can't find the ticket stubs for these. I've previously written about the time Sevendust played a last-minute headline show at The Bottleneck in Lawrence on July 19, 1997 after Coal Chamber and Powerman 5000 were forced to cancel.

By the time Coal Chamber released their second album, Chamber Music, in 1999 they were under the management of Sharon Osbourne and expectations were sky high. The album was a bit of a let down and didn't fulfill the promise of the previous album. Once again they put in a heavy touring schedule that had them doing some big shows. Let's face it - not many bands would be willing to take Slipknot out on the road as a support band after seeing how they stole the show and upstaged everyone on the 1999 Ozzfest tour, but Coal Chamber bravely did. Here's two ads from that tour in late 1999, the first took place in San Bernardino, California (I didn't go to this one), and the second at The Palace in Hollywood. I was at the Hollywood show, and this one sold out quick. Slipknot stole the show, as expected, but Coal Chamber still put on a great show even if Slipknot had sucked all the energy from the crowd.

My last time seeing Coal Chamber during this period was at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on April 19, 2000 during a co-headlining run with Type O Negative. This was one of the best shows I've seen from both bands.

From The Vault - SEVENDUST

I saw Sevendust a number times from 1997–2000 out on the road promoting their first two albums, Sevendust and Home. Here's a number of pictures and promotional items from that time.

A 1997 promotional picture signed by the band.

The first time seeing Sevendust was on July 19, 1997 at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas soon after the release of their debut album. I've already posted the audio of this show for download here, where you can read more details about this show. They were on the road supporting Coal Chamber, but Coal Chamber cancelled to attend an MTV Awards show. Refunds for the show were offered, but Sevendust went ahead with their own headline show anyway for about 30–50 people.

Another promotional picture from 1997.

Sevendust came back to the Kansas City area for a show with Coal Chamber (Dayinthelife... had cancelled, I believe) on February 12, 1998. I honestly don't remember much about this show other than it being a completely packed house.

The next time seeing them was on March 11, 1998 at The Beaumont Club in Kansas City supporting Limp Bizkit and Clutch for a sold-out show. By this time Sevendust was taking off, and touring continued with a run with Clutch, Stuck Mojo, and Ultraspank that brought them back to Lawrence on October 28, 1998 at the Granada Theater.

My final time seeing Sevendust during this time was June 18, 2000 at Cox Arena in San Diego where they were direct support to Creed with Nickelback opening (I previously posted Nickelback pictures from this concert here).

In Concert This Week - April 4, 2013

Tomorrow, Friday, April 5, Screaming Mechanical Brain tops a local bill with A Boy And His Dog, The Number Seven, The Disaster Radius, and Trip System at the Forest Lake Teen Center in Forest Lake. This is an all ages show that gets underway early at 4:00. I reviewed the latest Screaming Mechanical Brain album The Policy Of Unilateral Hate here (9/10). Tonight also has American Youth and Burn Fetish playing at The Garage in Burnsville for an all ages show.

On Sunday, April 7 metalcore/punk band A Day To Remember performs at Myth in St. Paul with Of Mice & Men and Issues. That same night Bon Jovi plays at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Sevendust and a reformed Coal Chamber play Mill City Nights in Minneapolis with Lacuna Coil and Candlelight Red on Monday, April 8. This is also a night of brutal death metal at Station 4 in St. Paul with Suffocation, Exhumed, Jungle Rot, Rings Of Saturn, and Adimiron.

Tuesday, April 9 is an evening of innovative metalcore with Within The Ruins and The Contortionist co-headlining a bill with I Declare War, Reflections, and City And The Sea at Station 4 in St. Paul. Read the review of the latest album from The Contortionist, Intrinsic here (10/10).

The mighty Clutch returns on Wednesday, April 10 for a show at First Avenue in Minneapolis with Orange Goblin, Lionize, and Scorpion Child. SEVENDUST - JULY 19, 1997, LAWRENCE, KANSAS

Sevendust was in the area a couple weeks ago playing a show in Mankato with Disturbed, Korn, In This Moment, and Stillwell. This seemed like an opportune time to dust off from my vault of uncirculated concerts a gem from the early Sevendust days.

Click to watch Sevendust open the show with "Black".
Transferred directly from the master VHS-C tape, this show captures Sevendust when they were a baby band just trying to survive on the road soon after the release of their debut album. This show was in the midst of a tour supporting Coal Chamber with Powerman 5000, but both bands canceled on this night. Coal Chamber bailed to attend an MTV awards show for which they were nominated, and I believe Powerman 5000's bus or van broke down. Ticket refunds were offered, but Sevendust's dumpy RV showed up and they played as a headliner for little or no cover charge. Being the last band standing on the bill, Sevendust stepped up and delivered an hour-long set to about 30 people where they played every song from the debut album. During their "Covers Medley", the band has some fun and riffs on King Kobra, Dio, Ratt, Powerman 5000, Coal Chamber, and Black Sabbath. Despite the poor attendance, the band played like the bar was full and were genuinely appreciative of the support as they hung out to chat with everyone after the show. The stage lighting in the video is poor, but the sound quality is excellent. Most of these songs haven't been in Sevendust's live set for years, so this is a real treat if you're a fan of old Sevendust!
