Having seen Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Band a few times before, I knew to expect the uncanny during this support slot to Children Of Bodom. Although the set was short (35 minutes), it ranked up there with two other memorable shows by Devin. The first time I saw SYL was way back on the City tour (opening for Testament and Stuck Mojo), undoubtedly the best time to have seen them. My favorite Dev show was seeing the Devin Townsend Band open for Symphony X about 5 years ago, where floored me by playing some songs from the godly Ocean Machine album.

Back to the present - this show was sold out and Station 4 was unbearably hot inside. Septicflesh and Obscura did a great job opening the show, but everyone was here for the final two acts. Multiple equipment problems delayed the start of DTP's set, but Devin keep the crowd entertained with his bizarre wit as he and the crew scrambled to get things going. Having released four albums in the last two years, it was shocking that only two of the six songs came from those albums. "By Your Command" from Ziltoid The Omniscient opened the show before Dev dug way back for "Truth" and "Om". Introduced as a ballad, "Supercrush!" would have been the evening's highlight if they hadn't followed this with "Kingdom", a super heavy, emotional song from the criminally overlooked Physicist album. It's one of my favorite Dev songs, and I couldn't believe I was actually hearing performed live to perfection. "Juulaar" was cut from the set, so "Stand" closed out the show.

This was the most engaging I've ever seen Devin, and his on-stage banter can only be described as unique and bizarre. His band sounded tight despite playing in extreme heat. I'll get to Children Of Bodom in an upcoming post, but in many ways DTP stole the show. Download this and bask in the glory!

SEVENDUST - JULY 19, 1997, LAWRENCE, KANSAS

Sevendust was in the area a couple weeks ago playing a show in Mankato with Disturbed, Korn, In This Moment, and Stillwell. This seemed like an opportune time to dust off from my vault of uncirculated concerts a gem from the early Sevendust days.

Transferred directly from the master VHS-C tape, this show captures Sevendust when they were a baby band just trying to survive on the road soon after the release of their debut album. This show was in the midst of a tour supporting Coal Chamber with Powerman 5000, but both bands canceled on this night. Coal Chamber bailed to attend an MTV awards show for which they were nominated, and I believe Powerman 5000's bus or van broke down. Ticket refunds were offered, but Sevendust's dumpy RV showed up and they played as a headliner for little or no cover charge. Being the last band standing on the bill, Sevendust stepped up and delivered an hour-long set to about 30 people where they played every song from the debut album. During their "Covers Medley", the band has some fun and riffs on King Kobra, Dio, Ratt, Powerman 5000, Coal Chamber, and Black Sabbath. Despite the poor attendance, the band played like the bar was full and were genuinely appreciative of the support as they hung out to chat with everyone after the show. The stage lighting in the video is poor, but the sound quality is excellent. Most of these songs haven't been in Sevendust's live set for years, so this is a real treat if you're a fan of old Sevendust!

Roger Waters came through the Twin Cities midway through his mammoth tour to play Pink Floyd’s The Wall in its entirely. Expectations were high for the sold-out crowd, and significant buzz was built up a couple days prior when Roger Waters was spotted having dinner with his entourage at Bar La Grassa in Minneapolis. Rumors flew throughout the local media that Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour had accompanied Waters to Bar La Grassa, raising hopes that St. Paul would be the city where Gilmour joined Waters on stage as he promised to do on one show of the tour. The dinner rumor proved to be unfounded, unfortunately, and Gilmour did not appear at this show. Nevertheless, this was a show of epic proportions that left no one disappointed.

The Wall was performed in the album’s running order, and Waters was greeted with thunderous applause as he strolled the front of the stage while the band launched into “In The Flesh?” A partial wall was already constructed several feet back from the front of the stage, and the band was set up towards the back. While the band seamlessly worked their way through the early part of the album, including “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)”, “Mother”, and “Goodbye Blue Sky”, the crew was kept busy as they gradually added bricks to the wall. The ever-enlarging wall was used as a video projection surface, and a circular screen was suspended behind the band. The circular screen was used to great effect during “Mother”, showing vintage live footage of Waters performing in sync. Speakers suspended throughout the arena were used to achieve a surround sound effect for many of the recorded sound effects during the show. Giant props were also brought out at times, such a giant marionette, an inflatable pig, and a suspended airplane that crashed into the wall at the end of the “In The Flesh?” By the time the first half of The Wall ended with “Goodbye Cruel World”, the wall was completed and was a sight to behold as it stretched from one side of the arena to the other at a massive height, probably about 15–20 feet high.

Following a 20 minute intermission, “Hey You” kicked off the second half of The Wall, and it initially seemed strange to have the band performing out of sight behind the wall. The band wasn’t entirely invisible, as clever tricks were used to showcase Waters and the band during this part of the set. A section of the wall was knocked out to show Waters lounging in a room setting while he sang “Nobody Home”. One of the more dramatic parts of the show was when one of the guitarists was perched on a scaffold atop the wall for the solos in “Comfortably Numb”. Towards the end of the show, the band rose up through risers in the floor so they could play in front of the wall. The show reached a climax with “Waiting For The Worms” as Waters yelled into a megaphone as the cacophony was built up into “The Trial”. At this point the crowd was in a frenzy, shaking their fists while chanting “tear down the wall!” The entire wall structure collapsed, and the band returned amidst the rubble to play the closer, “Outside The Wall”. Band members left the stage one by one as the dying notes faded until Waters was left standing to thank the audience.

Roger Waters defied all expectations this night, and this show will go down as one of the most memorable for all who attended. The band executed The Wall to perfection, and the lavish production was on the level of what you’d expect from a Broadway or Vegas show. Some critics have complained about the guitarists aping David Gilmour’s work, but what do you expect? More people would feel let down if the music was altered simply for the sake of making it different. In fact, the was allowing to stretch the songs at times, notably during extended guitar and keyboard solos during songs such as “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)”, “Comfortably Numb”, and “Run Like Hell”. No other band can put on an arena-sized production at this level, so this was a concert for the ages.

NEVERMORE - October 28, 1997, North Kansas City, MO

After a long absence, Seattle's Nevermore returned with a new album this year, The Obsidian Conspiracy, and they recently set out on an extensive North American tour. Station 4 in St. Paul hosts Nevermore, Warbringer, and Hatesphere for a Halloween show on Sunday, October 31. Go to the Nevermore Myspace page for a list of other remaining tour dates. Mutiny Within previously announced that they have dropped off the tour due the lack of a permanent drummer.

What better way to get primed for this show than to enjoy an uncirculated Nevermore concert unveiled here for the first time. Video and audio are available for you to download Nevermore captured in late 1997 while on tour to promote The Politics Of Ecstasy as the support band for Flotsam And Jetsam. Vocalist Warrel Dane wasn't kidding when he announced to the crowd as he takes the stage, "Hello, we're the band that no one knew was playing!" This show was part of radio station KQRC 98 Rock's Monday night sponsorship at Roadhouse Ruby's hosted by hilarious, popular morning show personality Johnny Dare, but no mention of Nevermore was ever given during promotion. Despite this, the club was packed early to witness Nevermore's first show in Kansas City. The 45 minute set primarily consisted of material from The Politics Of Ecstasy, and also included two songs from the In Memory EP and "Sanctuary", a song from the debut album, Refuge Denied, of Warrell and bassist Jim Sheppard's previous band Sanctuary. Having just reviewed the new album from Attention (here), it's a good excuse to post the complete video and audio of a show by Far that I recorded in 1998. The connection is that Far vocalist Jonah Matranga sang with most members of Attention in Gratitude, who released one album through Atlantic in 2005. Far never achieved more than a small cult following, but their 1998 album, Water & Solutions, is considered a landmark forerunner of today's emo-rock. This show captures Far less than a month after the release of Water & Solutions during a period that is considered the band's definitive time. On this tour Far was supporting Incubus (promoting the awesome S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album) with Ultraspank (before their first album was released). Although this particular night had some of the best lighting at The Hurricane, the video quality didn't hold up. It's very listenable and watchable, but I'd give both aspects of the recording a B. The set is mostly songs from Water & Solutions, with only two songs from Tin Cans With Strings To You performed. There's a song that I can't identify after re-listening to the band's entire catalog, so maybe someone can help me with this. If this is an unreleased song, I'm going to call it "For Ray". The encore song, "Seasick", is funny to check out. Weezer's "El Scorcho" is improvised before Jonah calls two guys from crowd on stage to give their best metal scream to determine if they'll play "Seasick" or "Love, American Style". Far also played at The Hurricane on the Tin Cans tour, but I can't remember the details of with whom they played. The band recently reformed and released an excellent album, At Night We Live, their first since 1998.

Limp Bizkit - July 14, 1997, Kansas City, MO

It seems difficult to remember that there once was a time when Limp Bizkit was not openly scorned and ridiculed like no band since Winger (despite their huge album sales). To give them credit, their debut album Three Dollar Bill, Yall$ was quite innovative at the time when rap-rock or nu-metal was emerging. This Ross Robinson-produced effort was much more raw then later albums, with a gritty, rough guitar sound. What I have for you here is the earliest full-length live recording of Limp Bizkit known to exist! The quality of both the audio and video of this recording is a solid A. This was a free in-store performance in the parking lot of 7th Heaven Records in Kansas City on an off date on the early part of their first tour as part of the 1997 Warped Tour. The show was preceded by an album signing session inside the store. Limp Bizkit was very cordial and friendly with everyone and spent a lot of time talking to their fans. Aimee Echo from Human Waste Project (and later TheSTART) was dating guitarist Wes Borland at the time and she also hung out during the signing. This event took place less than two weeks after the release of Three Dollar Bill, Yall$, and captures the band during a time when they were just trying to make it like any other baby band. I remember seeing Fred Durst walking around the tents at the Warped Tour show the next day in Lawrence, Kansas and nobody knew who he was or would give him the time of day! It's pretty funny to hear Durst announcing to the crowd while introducing "Counterfeit" that "we're at the Days Inn in Lawrence, Kansas, know what I'm sayin'?" He also tackles bassist Sam Rivers while playing during the end of "Faith" and drop-kicks the drum kit. Their first full-length album with guitarist Wes Borland in ten years, Gold Cobra, should be released this summer while playing a number of festival dates. This is the oldest full-length Limp Bizkit show I've seen online after some pretty exhaustive searches. If anyone knows of any older footage please let me know! I've only embedded two of the videos here, but go to my YouTube channel and you can view videos for all five songs if you don't want to download them. I was 25 years old when I shot this. I also have some old Limp Bizkit memorabilia (passes, concert flyers, signed CD, ticket stubs) from around this time that I'll try to post soon. Keep checking back!
UPDATE X 2: I've now posted some Limp Bizkit memorabilia (passes, concert flyer, ticket stub) from 1997 and 1998. Check in out here. Thanks to Marcelo, webmaster for The Armpit, the largest Limp Bizkit fan site community for his comment alerting me that he posted links and the video on the main news site of The Armpit. Some comments in their forum speculates that the band or record label is responsible for posting this footage. That is not true, and I am not (and never was) associated with the band or label in any capacity. I taped this show myself on a VHS-C camcorder, and digitized it directly from the master tape. The reason this footage has never been circulated is that I never was one to participate in the tape-trading world. I've moved too many times to count over the last ten years, and this tape sat in a box with my VCR and a large pile of shows I recorded around 1997–1999. I've only now had the luxury of time to start digitizing them. I decided to post it now because Limp Bizkit has a show coming up in the area in July.

Klank - January 17, 1998, Kansas City, MO

Here's another ultra-rare, uncirculated live show! This one comes from industrial metal powerhouse Klank, led by guitarist/vocalist Daren "Klank" Diolosa. Prior to forming Klank, Daren played guitar for the legendary Circle Of Dust. Quite simply, Klank's Still Suffering album, and Circle Of Dust's Brainchild and self-titled (the re-recorded 1995 version) albums are among the best industrial metal albums ever recorded! Klank has their first album of all new material in over ten years coming out later this year entitled Urban Warfare. A reworked version of their 1999 album Numb called Numb...Reborn (with a couple new tracks) was just released, and some live shows are in the works.

To gear up for all of this long-awaited activity, I digitized a VHS-C recording of Klank from the Still Suffering tour in Kansas City. This was recorded on January 17, 1998 at Yahweh Cappuccino in Kansas City, MO. The show actually took place in a cramped church basement with no stage and only stand-mounted lighting. Therefore, the video is a bit dark but the sound is fantastic. I remember it being a dark, snowy night and I had trouble finding the church. I arrived just as the show got underway, so the recording cuts into the first song, "Fall". Based on Daren's comments after "Scarified", "Leave" was not played. It's unclear if "Animosity" was played, but in any event the band performs nearly the entire Still Suffering album. This is the only known full-length live recording of Klank known to exist!!

I've also included below a flyer for a Circle Of Dust show in 1995 in Kansas City that I was lucky enough to catch. Man, what a show! Circle Of Dust were just absolutely crushing live, and they played a lot of my favorites such as "Dissolved", "Self Inflict", and "Onenemy". I wish I had a recording of that show.

Public Assassin - Des Moines, IA, June 1994

This thread started back on April 16 when I posted the complete audio and video of a classic Cannibal Corpse show with Chris Barnes from The Bleeding tour that, to the best of my knowledge, has never been circulated. Don't forget that Cannibal Corpse plays this Saturday, May 1 at Station 4 in St. Paul with support from 1349, Skeletonwitch, and Lecherous Nocturne. I decided to follow-up the original Cannibal Corpse post with the complete audio and video of the sets from the support bands on the tour: Cynic and Sinister. To complete the thread, here is the audio and video of the final opening band of this show: Public Assassin, featuring Richard Christy on drums!

Public Assassin was an excellent death metal band from Springfield, Missouri that put out a string of demos from 1989–1994. Upon moving to Florida to start Burning Inside, Richard Christy rapidly made a name for himself as a drummer for Acheron, Death, Control Denied, Demons & Wizards, and Iced Earth. He has now achieved even wider recognition as a comedian as a member of the Howard Stern Show. Richard's latest band is Charred Walls Of The Damned, which also features Tim "Ripper" Owens and Steve DiGiorgio. Their debut self-titled album was released this year on Metal Blade, and was reviewed here.

This show took place in June 1994 at the Two Rivers Music Hall in Des Moines, Iowa. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only complete Public Assassin set that has been made available. Although I'm not at liberty to disclose the taper, this is a first generation copy from the original source. Here's the set list, which primarily featured songs from their 1994 Murdered demo:

Sinister - Des Moines, IA, June 1994

The response to my posting of an uncirculated Cannibal Corpse show (here) from 1994 in anticipation of their May 1 show at Station 4 in St. Paul has been quite large, so I've been posting the video and audio recordings of the other bands from this classic show (Cynic is here). Now here is the complete set from Netherlands death metal legends Sinister in support of the Diabolical Summoning album. This was recorded in June 1994 at the Two Rivers Music Hall in Des Moines, Iowa. Cynic - Des Moines, IA, June 1994

Since I posted the video and audio of Cannibal Corpse from their June 1994 performance at the Two Rivers Music Hall in Des Moines, Iowa (view here), I thought It'd be shame not to post the performances of Cynic, Sinister, and Public Assassin from the same show. So here you get legendary progressive, technical death metal band Cynic playing nearly the entire godly Focus album.

The exact date of the recording is not known since this date was a late addition to the tour and is not listed on the official tour dates. Judging from the tour routing, Saturday, June 18 is the most likely date. A Saturday show would also be most likely since this was probably a matinee show due to the strength of the sunlight coming through the loading dock backstage. Although I'm not at liberty to disclose the taper, this is a first generation copy from the original source.

The video quality is excellent, aided by the fact that this was shot essentially in daylight. The audio quality isn't the best, but it's certainly very listenable. Probably a B overall. Other Video And Audio Concerts For Future Postings

Judging from the large volume of hits, downloads, and click-throughs from Blabbermouth, Brave Words (thanks for the posts today!!), and YouTube, many of you are enjoying the Exodus concert footage I posted. Here's a teaser for some future postings. Digging through my old box of tapes, I've shot full-length concerts (video) from these bands: Cannibal Corpse (w/Chris Barnes), Cynic (Focus tour), Nevermore, Flotsam And Jetsam, Obituary (w/o John Tardy!), Coalesce, Skrew, Sinister, 20 Deadflowerchildren, Acumen Nation, Public Assassin (w/Richard Christy), Fates Warning, Klank, Incubus, Limp Bizkit, 13 Mg, Sevendust, Strung Out, The Damned, Shine (Wino!), Coal Chamber, Soak, Pantera...I'm only about halfway through the box! All shows are from the mid-late 90s. I'll get to posting everything when I can, but priority goes to bands that are playing in The Cities. Be patient. Digitizing, editing, and uploading these shows takes a long time, but you will be rewarded with some killer uncirculated shows! I should have Cannibal Corpse from The Bleeding tour posted by next week.
