Through The Eyes Of The Dead Album Review

Through The Eyes Of The Dead - Skepsis
Prosthetic, 2010

5/10

This South Carolina death metal outfit is back with their third album following some lineup changes, the most prominent being a new vocalist. I’ll confess to not having heard their previous two albums so I can’t compare the differences in vocalists. Skepsis doesn’t spike my interest enough to go back and listen to the other albums, either. Through The Eyes Of The Dead seems to earn high praise for their old school death metal sound, and the band members were certainly weaned on Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, and other bands from the genre’s glory days. My main beef is that homogenous, repetitive nature of the songs. Sure, there’s furious riffage and loads of blast beats all over the place, but halfway through Skepsis everything blurs into a dizzying mess. The new vocalist is good – most of the lyrics are sung in a guttural growl, but the agonizing, tortured cries interspersed throughout the album keep things interesting. Skepsis isn’t a terribly bad album, and people who can’t enough death metal should give this a shot.

Through The Eyes Of The Dead will be appearing at The Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on Sunday, April 11. Support will come from Impending Doom, Arsonists Get All The Girls, Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, and Chelsea Grin.
